International Women’s Day 2011
International Women’s Day (8 March, 2011) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women’s Day is a national holiday. This year it celebrates its 100th birthday.
In Thailand there are various events held around the country. While there has been improvements in gender equality in Thailand it is still very much a man’s world. Women work longer generally in low skilled manual labor jobs and get paid less than male counterparts and it is socially acceptable even a fashion for men to have second girlfriends. However, women are becoming increasing more independent. Education for women is improving and many girls are now getting higher level jobs as a result.
This year I will be celebrating International Woman’s Day in Dublin Ireland. To highlight the day I took part in a photo shoot organised by Tolu OMoyele and photographed by the multi-talented Edina Valentova. Make-up was provided by Elaine Hopkins and Claire Walsh with Hair styling also by Claire Walsh and Elaine Hopkins. Models on duty were myself Piya, Lauren, Tolu and Katty. Tolu provided the styling with outfits by Claire Garvey & Lisa Marie De Bee. The location was a stylish roof top on Dublin’s O’Connell Street.
On the day itself next Tuesday, 08 March to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day there will be a themed Fashion show held in Temple bar Dublin. “The Amazonian Warrior” fashion event will feature a collection from Award winning Irish Designer Claire Garvey and South African Designer Lisa Marie De Beer. All are welcome and there is no cover charge. kick off is at 7.45pm.
For me international womans day is a chance to reflect on what it means to be a woman and celebrate that gender equality is for the most part slowly improving for women all over the world.
